TDI Extended Range

TDI Extended Range

As with many of the courses in the TDI training programme, this Extended Range programme serves to add more knowledge and skills to your diving development and leaves you qualified to take on more challenging and adventurous dives.

The course will reinforce much of what has been looked at on previous TDI programmes, but will go into greater depth, as well as introducing some new concepts/ideas.

Why TDI Extended Range?

This course will provide the training and experience required to competently utilize air for dives up to 55 msw (metres of sea water) that require staged decompression, utilizing nitrox mixturs or oxygen during decompression. The object of the programme is to train divers in the proper techniques, equipment requirements, hazards of deep air diving to this depth.

What do I need to start?

  • TDI Extended Range Diver Manual
  • This course also requires that students have certain kit available for all dives beyond a 'standard' single tank scuba setup. Primarily this includes :
  • A 'backgas' cylinder/s appropriate for planned dive. This could be a single cylinder (large cpacity) with a dual outlet valve or, more likely, a twinset.
  • Decompression Cylinders (included in course cost)
  • Redundant depth and timing devices
  • Redundant light
  • Jon line (if dictated by site conditions)

What will I do?

Prior to beginning the course you will be given the 'TDI Extended Range Diver' workbook. As with all our training we ask you to complete the knowledge reviews before you arrive for your academic presentation. There is also a written exam and a kit orientation. If the course is done as a stand alone, 6 dives with a minimum bottom time of 100 minutes are required (four dives must be 30+ metres). Subject areas covered include :

Physics Review
Physiology Review
Formulas Review
Decompression Options
Equipment Considerations
Dive table review
Dive computers
Dive Planning
Decompression Theory
Decmpression gas choice
Ascent / Descent Techniques
Decompression stations / types
Surface Support considerations

In water skills include (but are not limited to) :

Bouyancy Control
Teamwork
Ability to handle at least two stage cylinders
Confirm gas switches
Use of lift bag / SMB
Air sharing
Creating contingency deco schedules
Remove mask & deploy backup
Tired diver tows
Horizontal breath hold swim
Proceedure fro isolating a malfunctioning regulator
Navigation Techniques

How long will it take?

The course requires three (long) days to cover all required material. This will involve a mixture of both theory classes / briefs (approximately 9 hours) and open water dives (at least six with a total bottom time of 100 minutes). At least four of the six dives will be deeper than 30m.

What previous experience do I need?

Anyone wishing to enrol on this course must be a minimum age of 18 and be already hold a minimum certification of TDI Nitrox and Decompression Proceedures Diver (or equivalent from another training agency). In addition, you would need to be able to provide proof of at least 100 open water dives, including some experience of UK diving. At least 25 of your 100 logged dives must be deeper than 30 metres.

What do the fees include?

  • All professional tuition
  • Decompression cylinders and regulators required for course.
  • Oxygen analysers required for course
  • Extended Range Diver Course Manual
  • Insurance costs while on the course
  • All registration fees with TDI upon completion

What don't fees include?

  • Entry fee to dive site used for the Open Water dives

  • Any air/nitrox fills required for dives.
  • Hire of any equipment (except decompression regs/cylinders & gas analysers)

What's next?

This for many will be the course that opens up a huge number of dives previously beyond the scope of their training. The course leaves you qualifed to go out and perform staged decompression dives up to a depth of 45 metres. There are plenty of skills introduced on the course to go out and practice and refine.

Later on, you can start looking to enrol on TDI course that build further upon everything that you have learnt here. The TDI Advanced Wreck, Entry or Advanced Level Trimix course are all courses to take your diving further.
